It’s hard to know where to begin after such a stretch of silence. I couldn’t decide which train of thought to go with for a first post, so I’ll just share a few incomplete snapshots of the ones I’ve been mulling around. Just to get things warmed up, so to speak:
Bear or Dog?
An oft overlooked parent conundrum of this century. Those ears and that nose on my baby’s hat, hood, pajamas, shirt, blanket, etc. appear similar to … a puppy? …. or is it a bear? Or, is it the outlier fox that is now making gains in mainstream baby paraphernalia?
Tired is Now a Five Letter Word
I suggested to my husband last week that we just remove the word “tired” from our list of adjectives to describe ourselves. There’s no need, I feel, to state the obvious. We are both tired, and by my estimations will be for the next 17 and ¾ years, so we might as well save some of our precious energy and forgo using unnecessary words. We have been doing this already with words like “alive” and “human,” and it seems to be working quite well.
In Which I Will Never Tire of You Telling Me That My Baby is Beautiful
It’s true. Want to make my day? (And I dare say any parent’s day?) Tell me my baby is beautiful! Words like “precious,” “adorable,” and “cute” are all acceptable as well. I used to think myself a complicated emotional being. Turns out – I just need one thing to lift my spirits.
Could we have picked a worse time* in our country’s history to have a baby? (Okay, okay, don’t answer that. I see you high infant mortality rates of yore.) But truly. Things are dark, people, and I am afraid. And confused. And angry. The thought of my precious, innocent babe growing in this big scary world where violence in both word and action are being normalized by the highest level of leadership is nauseatingly despairing. I just can’t.
I joined a MOPS group and had an identity crisis. (It’s felt weird to make the shift from, “I had a baby” to “I’m a Mom.”) This particular MOPS group takes their food VERY seriously though, so we are going to get along juuuust fine.
It feels good to be back in this corner of the internet! Thanks for reading.
*I don’t want to ostracize anyone by “getting too political” as we like to say in this blessed country. However, honesty is a strong personal value of mine and a significant driver in my writing. So, I’ll just be honest (and respectful!) about what’s true in my own experience and opinion, and you do the same, mkay?
